1. Basic Info & Core Combat Mechanics of Dragonfly
1.1 Spawn Location & Base Stats
Dragonfly permanently spawns at the central magma pools of the desert, with a total HP of 27500. It respawns every 20 days by default, and the respawn rate can be adjusted in world settings. Dragonfly resets fully (HP refilled) if pulled over 60 tiles away from magma pools, dragged into water, or when reloading the server. Do not pull the boss too far during combat.
Its basic attack deals 150 damage and ignites players on hit. Flames can burn items in backpacks, structures and crops, so keep your base and storage far away during the fight.
1.2 Magma Worm Summon Stages (Main Difficulty of the Fight)
- 80% HP: Summons 5 Magma Worms
- 50% HP: Summons 6 Magma Worms
- 20% HP: Summons 7 Magma Worms
1.3 Enraged State Countermeasures
2. Full Pre-Battle Supply List for Solo Players
2.1 Defensive Gear
- 3–8 Marble Suits: High physical damage reduction, core armor for standstill tanking
- 3–4 Football Helmets: Stack damage reduction with Marble Suits to drastically lower incoming damage
2.2 Damage & Crowd Control Tools
- 1 Ham Bat: Reliable high-damage melee weapon
- 1–2 Pan Flutes: Obtained from the Glommer Statue, exclusively used to suppress enraged Dragonfly
- Ice Staff (Optional): Quickly eliminate stray Magma Worms to avoid early rage trigger
2.3 Healing & Survival Food
- 10+ Pierogi: Mass single-target healing, dedicated boss fight food
- Meatballs / Meaty Stew: Restore hunger to prevent sanity loss from starvation
- Cold Fire Pit / Endothermic Fire Pit: Cool players in the hot desert summer to avoid continuous heat damage
2.4 Blocking Construction Materials
- 40 Stone Walls + several Signs: Build separation barriers for the zero-movement standstill strategy
2.5 Pre-Fight Cleanup
3. Zero-Movement Stone Wall Block Strategy (Recommended for New Players)
-
Build the barrier
Construct a continuous row of Stone Walls beside the magma pools, leave a 1-tile gap in the wall and place a Sign inside the gap. This structure fully blocks Magma Worms from crossing, while Dragonfly can pass through the gap to attack you, perfectly separating the boss from its minions.
-
Pull aggro and start combat
Approach the magma pools to draw Dragonfly’s attention, lead it to your side of the wall, hold the attack key next to the wall and deal damage continuously. All Magma Worms will be trapped on the opposite side and cannot harass you.
-
Cycle through each HP phase
- When Dragonfly hits 80% / 50% / 20% HP, it will retreat to summon worms. Stop attacking, eat Pierogi to fully heal and wait for summoning to finish.
- The trapped worms despawn after 30 seconds automatically; keep attacking Dragonfly during this period.
- If Dragonfly enrages after all worms vanish, immediately play the Pan Flute, then resume tanking after the sleep effect ends.
- Final reminders
Drop your backpack far away from the battlefield to stop flames burning all your supplies. Light a Cold Fire Pit at night to avoid Shadow Creatures spawning in darkness.
4. Dragonfly Loot & Resource Applications
- Dragon Scales: Critical crafting material for Scaled Suit (full fire immunity, essential for summer and Ruins exploration) and Scaled Chest (greatly extends food spoilage time)
- Scaled Furnace Blueprint: The best all-season light and heat source for mid-game bases; it never ignites surrounding objects and provides permanent light
- 6 Big Meats, 1 Gold Nugget, 1 Red/Green/Blue Gem each
- Sculpture Sketch
- 33% chance to drop a Magma Worm Egg — hatch it for a domestic Magma Worm used as light source or trash incinerator
5. Common New Player Mistakes & Fixes
- Do not kill all Magma Worms at once; this triggers repeated enrage phases. Waiting for them to despawn naturally is safest.
- Never fight Dragonfly without a Pan Flute — its enraged triple slam one-shots players without high armor.
- Always bring Cold Fire for summer desert fights; continuous overheating drains healing food rapidly.
- Do not pull Dragonfly over 60 tiles away, or it will reset with full HP.
- Marble Suits wear out quickly; carry spares and swap damaged armor in time to avoid defense gaps.
- Avoid carrying flammable items during combat — fire attacks instantly burn food and gear inside backpacks.
6. Advanced Tips
- Multiplayer Strategy: One player tanks aggro with a Scaled Suit while others deal damage and clear worms for faster clears. Wigfrid’s lifesteal greatly improves tanking survivability.
- Fast Scale Farming: Stun Dragonfly by dealing 1250 damage quickly; dealing another 2500 damage during stun guarantees a Dragon Scale drop, ideal for mass scale collection.
- Prioritize crafting the Scaled Suit after your first Dragonfly kill. It drastically reduces survival pressure for volcano exploration, summer trips and all fire-based bosses.
